One day long ago Rick Droit walked down a long dirt road with tall trees on either side, past the abandoned houses and howling wild cats to a forgotten stretch of highway at the end and never looked back.

His backpack was filled with a few clothes, harmonica's and a journal of songs that he had written about his adventures and  feeling for animals, the enivironment and other people he had met along his journey.

Some say he hitchiked while others tell the tale that he simply walked and waited for the right ride to come along, when asked where he was going he would say "to where the wild things are. .so that I may play them many new songs"

In his early career he played with dozens of locally popular bands with names such as Indian Summer, Terra Nova, Cobalt Blue and Southern Prophet, the latter of which became a widely known touring band in the tri-state area of Illinois, Kentucky and Missouri, but it wasn't long before that old wanderlust spurred Rick back to a place he calls home, Austin Texas.

He has performed at the Kerrville Folk Festival's Threadgill Theatre, The Red River Radio Americana Festival and The old Pecan Street Festival to name a few, also Clubs, Restaurants, Coffee Houses and Benefits across the U.S. and his songwriting has gained him critical acclaim, radio and television airplay across the globe.

His first CD was titled "Gypsy Love" in homage to his once nomadic lifestyle and featured Emmy Dennison on flute, the follow up a few years later titled "Laughing like a Banshee" would show a marked growth and maturity in both style and presentation, "Banshee" was recorded at Flashpoint Studio's in Austin Texas where Townes Van Zandt (who Rick has often been compared to) recorded his last recordings, this CD would also feature many of Rick's musician friends such as Chris Chandler, Laura Freeman, Ky Hote, Owl Morrison, Danny Dolinger, Tami Griffin, Jason Wilkenson, Kale Kalloch, Jay Sea Campbell, Caroline Fuller and others who graciously lended thier talents to Rick's unique and compelling songs.

Both Gypsy Love and Laughing Like a Banshee sold well and continue to do so to this day, the songs "Morning in December"  and "Sidewinder" stayed in the top ten Americana Music charts for over 72 weeks and "Sleepy Hollow" a duet with Laura Freeman remained in the top three for two solid years.

Currently Rick is in pre-production to record a new CD which will features several special guests and 14 new songs

his music is ready for many new adventures, consider yourself invited to come sing along!

Kerrville Wine & Music Festival 2009

Hey there, I just returned from the Kerrville Wine & Music Festival in Kerrville, Texas, this great weekend is a small microcosm (dubbed "Little Folk" by regulars)  of the larger 18 day Kerrville Folk Festival which is a mecca for songwriters across the globe.

After my Van suffered from mechanical failure I had it towed into Austin, I had to cancel a gig at The Parlor on North Loop because I had to wait over 4 hours on AAA and still had to call a tow truck of my own choosing, Texan Towing did a great job of getting me there and I had a great conversation about music and the Austin scene with Warren my tow truck driver who plays in the band Triple Crown. My friend Geoff Herring who played on my 1999 CD "Laughing Like A Banshee" and who frequently sits in with me at gigs faithfully stayed up for the 3 plus hours while I was waiting to be hauled into Austin, but since I knew he had to work in the early morning and would have had to drive about 30 miles to come pick me up in Austin and then give me ride back inthe morning, I made a few other calls as well, then my friend Bruce Newman called and offered to pick me up and let me stay at his place, since he was pretty close to the mechanic shop where the van was being towed, I gratefully thanked him and called Geoff to thank him for staying up and let him off the hook as far as having to drive into Austin from Cedar Park at  2 a.m. (thanks again Geoff and Bruce!) You really find out who your real friends are when something like this happens and these guys are true blue.

I got a ride into the festival with a friend of my friend Bruce Newman at whose studio I recorded my first studio CD back in 1997 "Gypsy Love" and part of my 1999 release "Laughing Like A Banshee" ( The rest was recorded by "Flash" at Flashpoint Studios in Austin)

Bruce hooked me up with his friend Doug Marsh who is the founder of the Austin band "Catch A Dream", Doug is a super nice guy and we talked about guitars, bands, music, and life in general..later at the festival I had the pleasure of hearing his music which was phenomenal and we swapped CD's.. I also played at several great Camps that showcase music and original songwriters "Camp Skyhigh" founded by my friends Geoffrey "Skyman" Cope and Karen "Gadjet Girl" Musick (Karen did the wonderful stunning artwork on my 1999 CD "Laughing Like A Banshee" ), and also at Camp Mix'd Nuts among others..I got to play with Tami Griffin again who played flute on my "Banshee" CD back in '99..she sounded great and sang some wonderful harmony ..it was great getting to jam with so many great musicians and to see some of my long time friends and made a whole new set of fans.

I almost forgot Bruce Newman took me to a local jam circle run by Nathan of Nathan's Train Stage Jammers, It was great having Ramone on drums and Dave on Bass and sharing songs with Lucious, Cy, Bruce, Rick, Dana and so many other great musicians..what a fun night..

I am still working on pre-production of my new CD which is being kept tightly under wraps. . more on that later

On Wednesday I towed my van back to East Texas and am resting up for the Southwest Regional Folk Alliance Conference which is held towards the end of the month, all things considered it was a good trip although im not sure what will happen with van yet, I have to get a second opinion on fixing it or getting a different vehicle.

well, that's my update, drop me a line and say hello anytime,  best Summery wishes  -- Rick Summer Droit
